LUIGI SERRA Battery 2nd GM - 338th Coastal Battalion

The Luigi Serra coastal battery is located in Punta Filasca and its construction dates back to the 1930s immediately after the First World War by the "Royal Army", the battery rises 51 meters above the sea level.

The command post consisting of 5 compartments was defended by two or more heavy machine gun posts. The rangefinder, which took care of detecting the distance to the target, was housed inside an iron turret rotating at 360 °, the detected data were communicated by telephone to the 4 circular reinforced concrete stations arranged in a radial pattern on different levels and armed with cannon 120/45 on platform cradle carriage, mod. Armstrong 1918 fixed to the pad by a crown of 32 large bolts. Each of the 4 positions is equipped with a reservoir where the bullets were placed. Another larger reservoir is located underground between the command post and the two barracks for the military. The work is completed by a large cistern for water and a fence with pigtails and barbed wire. The position was connected to the firing direction by a walkway similar to a low trench where the runners moved away from any shot. Of the four positions, the most characteristic is number one, entirely dug out of the rock. The not particularly spacious santabarbara is dug out of the rock as well. The largest bunker originally housed the command post and two military barracks; it is currently not accessible as it is used as an electrical compartment. Other than that, only one other warehouse building is still used.

The battery depended on the IV Coastal Brigade and played a role of strategic importance during the two World Wars. During the period of the 2nd GM it was garrisoned by the 338th coastal battalion of the Royal Army, dependent on the IV coastal brigade under the command of Colonel Perni Fortunato, in 1943 the Batt. Serra was commanded by lieutenant Gino Biagini. He has never fired a shot. In the area there is also a support pole for a nautophone installed by the marina in the 1950s (nautical warning, it emits an audible signal in case of fog).
